Hostas perform best in moist but well-drained garden soil enriched with plenty of compost or leaf mold. They prefer partial shade, and though they can thrive in full shade, their growth may not be as lush. In cooler areas of the country, they can survive in full sun, but the foliage may sunburn or bleach if exposed directly to hot sun. In warmer climates, approximately one to two hours of summer sun is the limit. Hostas are hardy in Zones 3 to 8 and need a period of dormancy with freezing temperatures in the winter.
